The Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is one of the most easily recognized—and widely feared—animals in North America. Skunks are highly adaptable opportunists that thrive in both rural and suburban environments. • The Spray: A skunk's famous defense mechanism is a noxious, sulfur-based fluid (composed of thiols) produced by two glands near the base of its tail.
